Self-hosted

Self-hosted runs apps from panel's catalogue, each in a container of its own. It is off until you switch it on on the Modules page, which installs Podman, the program that runs the containers.

The page says how the apps are — "2 of 3 apps running. Jellyfin has an update." — then the installed apps, Now playing while Jellyfin plays something, Kept from removed apps, and the catalogue.

An app is offered only where it has been tested: its exact image was run and checked on a machine like yours — that nothing in it runs as root, that it listens only where it should, that it starts again after a stop. The others are shown with why they are not offered.

Installing

Install in an app's drawer asks for its folders — where your films are, say — with the disks listed, and anything the app needs first, such as Syncthing's name and password. It downloads the app, makes its account and folders, and starts it. The steps show as it goes.

An installed app

Its row has Open once it answers. Its drawer has the rest: Start or Stop, Update when a newer version is in a panel release, where it keeps things, old copies, its own setup, and Remove last.

  • Its ports are open to your home network only, while the app is on — and for an app with a first account to make, only once it has one.
  • Folders an app only reads are given to it read-only. Your folders are never deleted by the panel.
  • Move to a disk moves a folder, or the app's own data, onto a disk from the NAS: the app is stopped, everything copied and counted again, and the app started. The old copy stays, listed under the app, until you remove it.
  • Updates are never automatic: an app's own data may not go back to an older version.
  • Remove asks you to type the app's name. With also delete, its data goes too; your folders never do.

The apps

Jellyfin reads your films, series and music read-only. Its first administrator is made on this page before it opens to the network. Connect signs in once to make a key for the panel, so the page and Home show what each screen plays, with Pause, Resume and Stop. On a machine with a graphics chip, Jellyfin is given it for converting video.

Plex reads the same folder as Jellyfin. It starts locked down: no searching the network, no usage data, no remote access. Its port stays shut until you Link to your Plex account with a code from plex.tv/claim.

Syncthing keeps a folder in step with your other devices. The name and password for its page are typed at install, set in Syncthing, and not kept by the panel.

TREK plans trips. Its first administrator is an email and password typed at install; TREK asks for a new password at the first sign-in. Turn off its own sign-up in its settings.
