Using panelEvery page

The pages

Every page works the same way: a heading that says how things are, a line under it with the detail, and rows in sections. Each section's heading has an icon in a colour of its own, and the same thing keeps its colour everywhere: storage is green, disks purple, shares pink, the apps violet, this panel orange. Amber is only for what wants a look. A row opens a drawer with the rest — what is known about it, and what you can do. Nothing is changed without a button that says what it does.

The menu

The menu holds Home, an entry for each thing the machine is — Network on a router, NAS, Self-hosted — then **Fleet**, once there is another panel, then Activity and Settings. A NAS alone has Home, NAS, Activity and Settings.

What is set up once and then left is under Settings: Wi-Fi, Firewall, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Status, Household, Accounts, Other panels, Modules and Maintenance. On a phone Settings is a page of rows; on a wide screen it is a list beside the page.

On a phone the menu is the bar at the bottom, the open page's icon on a pill of its colour, and everything is drawn a tenth bigger than on a computer.

The box above the menu, the magnifier on a phone, or the / key. It finds every page you may open, the things on them — a share, an app, a device — and the people.

A page's tabs that do not fit on a phone slide sideways: the edge fades where there are more, and the open one is brought into view.

Drawers

A drawer slides in from the side, or up from the bottom on a phone. It follows what it shows: if the thing changes while it is open, the drawer changes with it, and if the thing goes away, the drawer closes. Esc or ✕ closes it.

Help

The ? beside a page's heading opens that page's part of this manual in a drawer, with a link to the whole page. The manual is served by the machine itself, at /docs, so it works without the internet.

The bands at the top

  • A change waiting to be kept, counting down, with Keep, more time, and undo. See Changes that wait to be kept.
  • Managing another panel, in amber, with Back. See Panels.
  • Restarting the machine, which follows the machine through its restart and loads the page again when it is back.
  • Running from the stick, on a PC that started from the USB stick. See Installing on a generic x86 PC.

Your account

Your name at the top of the page (Settings on a phone, under You) opens your account: your name and your second factor.
